Eating grapes daily may improve sight in old age

This is what the results of a new and first-of-its-kind study on a number of older people showed.

A balanced diet is essential for weight loss, but some foods can help certain parts of the human body stay at their best for longer.

Eating grapefruit every day can help keep eyes as healthy as possible, according to new research, according to the British newspaper The Mirror, citing the journal Food & Function.

A cup and a half

According to the current study's findings, older people who consumed 46 grams of grape powder or a cup and a half of grapes every day for four months had an improvement in their eye health.

The study, the first of its kind, addressed the effect of grape consumption on macular pigment buildup compounds found in fruit and vegetables that are known for their benefits to vision.

Very exciting

Dr. Jong-ion Kim, the lead researcher on the study, said: "The study is the first to show that grape consumption beneficially affects eye health in humans, which is very exciting, especially with age. Grapes are easily available fruit, and studies have shown that they can have a beneficial effect in normal amounts of just one and a half cups a day, "he said.

 Harmful compounds

Eye diseases and vision problems are more prevalent in older adults, and, according to the researchers, one of the main drivers of these diseases are harmful compounds referred to as ages that can form when protein or fat combine with sugar in the bloodstream. These compounds contribute to disease by damaging the blood vessel components of the retina, which in turn impairs cellular function.

Antioxidants

Dietary antioxidants can inhibit the formation of AGEs, which can benefit the retina by showing an improvement in the visual density of macular pigment MPOD, an important measure of vision health. Grapes, as well as being a source rich in vitamin C, are full of antioxidants known as phenolic compounds, which can prevent the body from producing harmful AGEs.

 Multiple benefits

Researchers conducted a random human study on 34 participants, with some eating a cup and a half of grapes daily for 16 weeks and others given a placebo. Those who ate grapes showed a significant increase in MOOD, as well as improved plasma antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content.
